Bob Marley - Legend [Deluxe Edition]

The classic Marley album, the one that any fair-weather reggae fan owns, Legend contains 14 of his greatest songs, running the gamut from " I Shot the Sheriff " to the meditative " Redemption Song " and the irrepressible " Three Little Birds. " Some may argue that the compilation shortchanges his groundbreaking early ska work or his status as a political commentator, but this isn't meant to be definitive, it's meant to be an introduction, sampling the very best of his work. And it does that remarkably well, offering all of his genre-defying greats and an illustration of his excellence, warmth, and humanity. In a way, it is perfect since it gives a doubter or casual fan anything they could want. Let's face it, the beauty and simplicity of Marley's music was as important as his message, and that's captured particularly well here. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan / Rolling Stone MUSIC : 97/500 Dylan's second LP was released on May 27th, 1963 — three days after his twenty-second birthday. It was a tender age for such a historic triumph. On Freewheelin', the poetry and articulate fury of Dylan's lyrics and his simple, compelling melodies transformed American popular songwriting. He later made light of the protest anthem "Blowing in the Wind" ("I wrote that in ten minutes," he said in '66). But Dylan's wholly original grip on grit, truth and beauty in "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Masters of War" still changes everyone who hears this album, four decades later. Django Reinhardt-The Best of Django Reinhardt

This collection serves as a good introduction to the famous Gypsy guitarist, including as it does examples of the original Hot Club of France quintet with Stephane Grappelli, solo pieces, duets, trios, groups including reed or brass players, and two encounters between Django and ensembles of American musicians. The emphasis tends to be on Django's early Hot Club work, represented by five tunes on this CD, but several others here retain a Hot Club era feeling, particularly the duet with Quintet bassist Louis Vola and the Grappelli-less trio of "I'll See You In My Dreams." The debate continues to rage over whether the postwar reunion of Reinhardt with Grappelli ever came close to their triumphs of the '30s; the last five cuts will allow you to judge for yourself. And if you're looking for the roots of the "New Acoustic Music" as perpetrated by David Grisman, Mark O'Connor et al, check out "Minor Swing." Like so many tunes that became

Abbey Lincoln - A Turtle's Dream

A TURTLE'S DREAM was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. This release continued Abbey Lincoln's '90s resurgence. As with her preceding Verve releases, A TURTLE'S DREAM features notable guest musicians (including Pat Metheny, Kenny Baron, and Lucky Peterson), all of whom add grace to the proceedings. Her core backing trio comprises Rodney Kendrick on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The set features primarily her originals, along with a pair of covers, including Eben Ahbez's "Nature Boy." The opening song, "Throw It Away," has a melancholy resonance that is utterly inviting as Lincoln pours herself into the lyrics with deep passion and subtle dramatics. The addition of a string section on a couple of numbers--especially "Down Here Below"--makes for some elegant blues. Recorded at Clinton Recording Studio, New York on May 28, August 29, and November 7 & 8, 1994. http://www
